Golf is a sport which involves a lot of perseverance and patience to perfect – two things which young children typically don’t have much of.
As such, getting your children hooked on golf can be a lot easier said than done. In fact, many kids would rather spend their time playing a golf game on their smartphone than actually out on a course itself.
However, golf can offer a lot of unexpected benefits, not only helping towards improving the wellbeing of your children, but also enhancing their cognitive function at the same time.
Therefore, if you’re trying to encourage your children to get into golf, we thought we’d lend a hand.
Join us as we run through a few ideas on how to unglue your children from their smartphones and get excited about the world’s oldest sport instead.
Invest in a golf simulator
While on the topic of staring at a screen, golf simulator systems like the SkyTrak Full System Golf Simulator can be a great way of encouraging children to get into golf from the comfort of their own home.
Whether you have a mancave, she-shed or converted garage with a simulator installed, the game-like interface of these systems is a sure-fire way of wowing children, providing them with an immersive experience like no other.
Plus, simulator systems are a great way of demonstrating to your children just how many aspects actually go into golf – from the choice of clubs to the body position to the swing.
Make it a short game
As I mentioned at the start of the article, children can lose patience quickly. So, to prevent them from getting bored going around all 18 holes, it could be worth making the games shorter.
After all, depending on your skill level, golf can be a relatively long game to play, involving a lot of walking for your little ones to put up with.
Therefore, by making the game slightly shorter – or setting a time limit on it – you will be better able to stop them from growing bored, frustrated or tired while out on the course.
Keep it fun
As serious as golf may be to adults, it can mean an entirely different thing to children. In other words, with so many other things to get their head around, they may not have the same instantaneous love of it as you do.
Therefore, try to make it a fun sport for them to play. Allow them to naturally grow into it and give them the freedom to want to get better on their own, without you forcing it onto them.
What’s more, try not to be overly critical. Just because they hit an ‘okay’ shot doesn’t mean you should pressure them into making it perfect straight away.
The chances are they’re not going to be the next Tiger Woods so, rather than telling them off, encourage them and teach them using a much softer and nicer manner.
Buy a few at-home accessories
Put simply, the more your children are surrounded by golf, the more impact it is likely to have on their lives.
As such, it could be worth your time investing in a few at-home golf accessories to help harness their interest.
Whether it be a practice net in the back garden, an artificial green or a set of their very own golf clubs, the more attention you pay to sustaining your children’s interest in golf, the better the results will be.
